Collaboration in Education

Hello Bloggers! In today’s blog, we will be discussing collaboration. Collaboration within education can come in many forms. Collaboration could be between teachers, students or even teachers and students working together within the classroom (Barfield, 2016). Collaboration, is working together in order to reach a shared end goal (Smith and MacGregor, 1992).  There is a growing need for collaboration in schools due to more demand for collaboration in jobs, as teamwork is essential for the modern workplace.   Lloyd and Beard (1995) believe that talking to peers is an educational tool and that it is important in everyday life to communicate. In particular in schools, teachers and students must have good communication in order for students to make the most of the learning teachers deliver. Teachers are not the only source of knowledge within the classroom. It is beneficial for students to be good communicators with other students so that they can discuss ideas, as ever...

Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning

Hello Bloggers! In today’s blog, we will be discussing the positives and negatives of cross curricular teaching. Plowden (1967) highlights that children’s learning does not fit into subject categories. However, do we need to change a curriculum that has worked for years? Schools need to change to cross curricular learning in order to focus on more ‘globalised times’ (Kerry, 2015). It can be argued that cross curricular teaching mirrors the real word more successfully than the current curriculum does. For example, I found in my time at school that the work set in Maths, was not relevant to the Maths I would need to apply in real life situations. Kerry (2015) highlights that important skills both now and in the future, will be evaluating and applying knowledge rather than simply retaining facts in order to pass exams. Therefore as recommended by Donaldson, there is need for change within the curriculum. Donaldson (2015) suggests that the curriculum should prepare studen...

Collaboration

Welcome back bloggers to the last blog before the Christmas break. Today’s blog is going to discuss Collaboration. Throughout the blog, I am going to focus on what collaboration is, how it can be implemented, what are the positives of it and my own experience of collaboration in a teaching setting. According to Donaldson (2016) collaboration is a key skill which is required by employers which is why schools should be required to demonstrate and teach collaboration. Within the classroom teachers need to plan in advance to ensure a collaborative environment is fostered. According to Lloyd and Beard (1995) language is a huge factor when collaborating, it is essential when communicating. Individuals are able to interpret work when using language when collaborating with others. Similar to Lloyd and Beard, Barnes (1976) believes that communication is essential and it is at the heart of education. When implementing collaboration, teachers communicate with learners but to ensure tha...
